Getting to Switzerland |
Situated at the heart of Europe, Switzerland borders upon five
countries and is the crossroads of the continent. Thanks to its
location Switzerland is easily accessible from the main European
cities. The Swiss transport network is well developed and can be
considered as one of the wonders of the world. Going to travel Switzerland, you
need to define the itinerary by means of a map and to
choose a convenient mode of transport.
The fastest way of traveling is by air. The main international gateways
of Switzerland are Zurich
and Geneva,
however Bern,
Lugano and Basel also receive international flights. The main Swiss
airports are served by the leading airlines of the world and are
connected with the nation's rail network. One of the most popular
flights is a direct winter flight from London to Sion in the Alps,
taking about 1 hr 30 min. It is necessary to add that flying out of
Switzerland you don't have to pay departure taxes.
As Switzerland has a well-maintained infrastructure of rail transport,
traveling by train is widespread among the Swiss. Due to its favorable
location Switzerland is linked to the Inter-European railways of at
least a dozen countries. The Swiss Federal Railways
boasts more
than 800 public transportation stops and more than 3 million passengers
each year. Though pleasant and relaxing, a traveling by
train won't help you to save money, being often rather expensive.
Traveling by bus can be cheaper, though less comfortable and slower.
Switzerland has perfectly adjusted motorways through the neighbor
countries and can be easily reached by international buses.
If a ship voyage is affordable, you can also get to Switzerland by boat
along the Rhine - or by lake steamer ferries via Lake Constance (from
Germany), via Lake Maggiore (from Italy) and via Lake Geneva (from
France). Traveling by ship you will have the opportunity to admire the
splendid scenery and the
best
places of Switzerland.
